In a show of unwavering commitment to regional security, approximately 14,000 American and Filipino troops are set to engage in high-stakes military exercises in the Philippines. Dubbed ‘Balikatan,’ these joint drills between the allies will span from April 21 to May 9, featuring 9,000 US and 5,000 Filipino military personnel alongside Australian and smaller delegations from Japan and other friendly nations. The exercises will encompass live-fire drills, including the use of fighter aircraft, navy ships, and advanced weaponry such as a US anti-ship missile system.

Amid escalating tensions, particularly in the South China Sea and near Taiwan, these exercises have drawn scrutiny from China, which perceives them as containment efforts by the US and its allies. Notably, Taiwan, a democratic island claimed by China, has been at the center of recent large-scale drills conducted by Beijing. Despite such geopolitical complexities, the Philippines maintains that the Balikatan exercises are not directed at any specific country.

Under the backdrop of the Trump administration’s ‘America First’ foreign policy stance, concerns have emerged regarding the depth of US commitment to regional security in Asia.
