Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the U.S. has agreed to suspend planned tariffs on Mexico for a month following a phone call with President Trump. Sheinbaum shared on X that the tariffs are on hold for the next month. As part of the agreement, Mexico will deploy 10,000 national guard troops to the border to combat drug trafficking, particularly related to fentanyl, and the U.S. will work to curb weapons trafficking into Mexico.

Trump confirmed the positive nature of the conversation with Sheinbaum on his Truth Social Platform and praised the commitment to reinforce border security with the troop deployment. Earlier, Trump had threatened a 25% import tax on goods from Mexico and Canada, as well as 10% tariffs on Chinese goods, which were set to take effect soon. Mexico had expressed concerns about the potential impact of a tariff war on both U.S. consumers and American companies operating in Mexico, highlighting the significant trade ties between the two countries.

Negotiations between the U.S. and Mexico will continue, led by key officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Trump expressed his anticipation for these talks and his hope for a favorable deal between the two nations as they navigate trade relations in the coming days.
