This move aligns with Trump’s claims of political bias within the Justice Department, although no evidence supports these assertions.

Bondi, a former Florida attorney general and Trump ally, has emphasized her commitment to impartial decision-making. However, she has echoed Trump’s accusations of political persecution in the Justice Department’s handling of investigations. The working group’s scope is comprehensive but lacks prosecutorial authority and excludes inquiries into Democrats, such as probes into classified information mishandling and Hunter Biden’s legal issues.

Smith’s investigations into Trump’s election interference and classified document handling led to indictments that were dropped due to restrictions on prosecuting a sitting president. Despite Trump’s criticisms, Smith maintains that his decisions were based on evidence, not politics. Bondi, sworn in by Justice Clarence Thomas, has pledged to restore integrity to the Justice Department and combat violent crime.

Bondi’s leadership will oversee the FBI amid internal challenges, including lawsuits filed by agents concerned about potential repercussions from ongoing investigations. Acting deputy attorney general Bove assured ethical agents that they are not at risk, signaling a commitment to justice over partisanship within the department.
