The Pentagon announced plans to expel openly transgender members and give others a 30-day window to self-identify. Following a Supreme Court decision, the defense department will now review medical records to identify undisclosed cases of gender dysphoria.

The new policy relies on routine health assessments, with a deadline for voluntary disclosure set for June 6 for active-duty troops and July 7 for the national guard and reserve. Individuals opting to leave receive enhanced separation pay, though the voluntary nature of this offer is questioned. A new gender dysphoria question will be included in annual assessments, prompting disclosure during medical checks if not done voluntarily.

Unit commanders have a role in expediting health assessments for members with gender dysphoria. The defense official emphasizes the importance of service members and commanders complying with the process. Data from December 2024 indicated 4,240 diagnosed cases of gender dysphoria across military branches, with potential underreporting.

Contrary to previous allowances, the current policy does not protect existing transgender service members and offers minimal waivers. Former President Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth justify the move by citing military standards, with Hegseth expressing anti-trans sentiments publicly. Joe Biden reversed the ban upon assuming office. The new process raises concerns reminiscent of past discriminatory policies like “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
