In a thrilling match, Antoine Griezmann’s late goal secured a 1-0 victory for Atlético Madrid against Botafogo in the Club World Cup Group B action. Despite the win, Atlético Madrid fell short of advancing to the knockout rounds as they needed a victory by at least three goals. Paris Saint-Germain claimed the top spot in the group with a 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders.
Griezmann’s goal in the 87th minute was the result of relentless attacking from Atlético, but their efforts were not enough to progress in the tournament. Botafogo had their chances too, with a prime opportunity in the 10th minute denied by Atlético Madrid’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
In the other Group B match, PSG secured their place in the last 16 with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi were the goalscorers for PSG, with Gianluigi Donnarumma keeping a clean sheet.
Despite a valiant effort from the Sounders, PSG’s quality showed as they controlled the game and sealed the win. PSG will now face the second-place finisher from Group A in the next round. Seattle Sounders, on the other hand, were eliminated from the tournament, joining LAFC in exiting the competition. Inter Miami could potentially face PSG in the next round depending on their result in Group A.
