Three top U.S. prosecutors, including Danielle Sassoon, the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, resigned over the Justice Department’s directive to drop the criminal corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Sassoon, appointed by the Trump administration, resigned three days after being instructed to drop the case. Emil Bove, the acting No. 2 official at the Justice Department, accepted Sassoon’s resignation and placed three assistant U.S. attorneys on leave pending investigations into their conduct. Hagan Scotten, a decorated veteran and Harvard Law School graduate, was among those placed on leave. Following Sassoon’s resignation, John Keller and Kevin Driscoll also resigned after being asked to take over the Adams case. Adams, indicted on corruption charges with a scheduled trial in April, has maintained his innocence. His attorneys accused U.S. attorneys of mishandling the case, alleging leaks to the media. The fallout from the Adams case has been described as the worst seen so far, with the decision to drop the case viewed as shocking. The Justice Department memo called for shelving federal charges against Adams “without prejudice,” while the indictment alleged he used his official positions for personal gain. Overall, the resignations and handling of the Adams case have raised significant concerns and scrutiny within the Justice Department.
