In a recent instance during the Group of 7 summit in Canada, President Donald Trump reiterated a false claim regarding Canada’s role in Russia’s expulsion from the Group of 8. Trump inaccurately attributed this action to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, despite Trudeau not assuming office until after Russia’s expulsion in 2014. The actual decision to remove Russia was led by Trudeau’s Conservative predecessor, Stephen Harper, following Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region.

During the summit, Trump also made misleading statements about trade deals and aid to Ukraine. He erroneously described a trade deal with the UK as an agreement with the European Union and falsely asserted that former President Joe Biden provided $350 billion in aid to Ukraine. In reality, data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy refutes Trump’s claim, showing that the US committed about $138 billion in aid to Ukraine between late January 2022 and April 2025.

Furthermore, Trump inaccurately claimed that Biden allowed 21 million undocumented immigrants into the US. However, official records indicate that there were under 11 million recorded encounters with migrants during the Biden administration, including those who were expelled from the country. Even considering additional unrecorded cases, the total does not align with Trump’s assertion of 21 million.

These instances highlight the importance of fact-checking and verifying information, especially in high-profile settings like international summits, to ensure accuracy and prevent the spread of misinformation.
