A recent CNN poll conducted by SSRS sheds light on the American public’s perception of Donald Trump’s presidency as he prepares for his first formal address to Congress since returning to office. The survey reveals a predominantly negative view across key performance indicators, with 52% disapproving of Trump’s performance compared to 48% approval. Notably, Trump enjoys strong support from Republicans (90% approval) but faces significant disapproval from Democrats (90% disapproval) and a growing disapproval among independents (59% disapproval).

Despite Trump’s 48% approval rating, higher than before his 2017 address to Congress, skepticism prevails regarding his policy direction. More Americans believe his policies are leading the country in the wrong direction (45%) rather than the right one (39%). A majority also feel that Trump has not focused on the nation’s most critical issues (52% share this sentiment).

Demographically, Trump’s approval ratings vary, with younger adults, Hispanic and Black adults, and women showing higher levels of disapproval. Independents also lean negatively towards Trump’s policies. While some groups remain undecided on Trump’s proposals’ impact, the overall sentiment indicates a divided perception of his presidency.

The poll, conducted from February 24-28 with 2,212 adults, highlights the ongoing challenges and mixed opinions surrounding Trump’s leadership and policy direction. As Trump addresses Congress, he faces a public that remains divided on his performance and policy priorities.
