House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is collaborating with other top Republicans to advance a budget bill aimed at pushing through key policy priorities of President Trump without facing filibuster threats from Senate Democrats. The Republicans in Congress are under pressure to finalize competing plans quickly, with discussions focusing on extending the federal borrowing limit, continuing tax cuts from 2017, and fulfilling campaign promises related to the U.S.-Mexico border and tip taxes elimination.
Using the budget reconciliation process, Republicans aim to pass these priorities without Senate Democrats’ obstruction. The House Republicans, including Rep. Lisa McClain, engaged in lengthy discussions following a meeting at the White House, striving to reach a consensus on the budget framework. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted additional proposed changes, such as eliminating taxes on senior Social Security and overtime pay, adjusting tax deductions, and focusing on Made-in-America products.
However, the path to passing the bill remains challenging, given the narrow House majority of Republicans, necessitating near-unanimous support within the party. Furthermore, Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Lindsay Graham, are poised to introduce a separate budget measure, covering energy, border security, and military provisions. Sen. John Barrasso emphasized the urgency to act decisively, indicating a Senate delegation’s upcoming meeting with Trump in Florida to further discuss these legislative priorities.
