In “Fight for America!” a unique art installation by the american vicarious, participants engage in a war game reenactment of the January 6, 2021, Capitol siege. Players are divided into Red and Blue Teams, representing different sides of the conflict. The game combines elements of traditional war games like Risk with character assignments akin to Dungeons & Dragons, set against a detailed replica of the U.S. Capitol. Designed to prompt dialogue and understanding between opposing viewpoints, the game challenges players to embody real individuals involved in the events of that day.
Led by game master Uncle Sam, players strategize and maneuver mini-figures while receiving unexpected advantages through cards and screen prompts. As the Red Team gains momentum towards breaching the Capitol, tensions rise, culminating in a controversial decision-making moment where players must choose to protect or harm Vice President Mike Pence. The immersive experience blurs the lines between reality and simulation, prompting reflection on the nature of democracy, community, and human behavior.
While some participants initially found the concept absurd, the game serves as a thought-provoking exercise in empathy and perspective-taking. Through the lens of gameplay, individuals grapple with complex moral and ethical dilemmas, ultimately fostering discussions on unity, community, and the implications of political polarization. “Fight for America!” challenges players to confront uncomfortable truths and consider the power of collective action and shared responsibility in shaping the future of democracy.
