JD Vance, the vice-president, criticized California governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass for allegedly fueling violent immigration protests during his visit to Los Angeles. Vance also referred to US senator Alex Padilla as “Jose Padilla,” causing controversy after Padilla was handcuffed during an immigration-related incident. Vance accused California Democrats of inciting unrest in the city by opposing border enforcement measures.
Following clashes between protesters and police in Los Angeles, Vance toured federal immigration enforcement offices and blamed local officials for hindering law enforcement efforts. He echoed President Trump’s strong stance on immigration and accused Newsom and Bass of creating a sanctuary city environment that endangered federal law enforcement officers.
Newsom’s spokesperson refuted Vance’s claims, emphasizing the governor’s condemnation of violence. Vance’s reference to “Jose Padilla” sparked further controversy due to the association with a convicted al-Qaida plotter. In response, Vance’s spokesperson clarified that the vice-president may have confused individuals who have broken the law.
Meanwhile, federal immigration authorities have increased arrests nationwide to fulfill Trump’s deportation promises. The deployment of military personnel to Los Angeles amid immigration sweeps and protests has intensified tensions between the Trump administration and California officials. Newsom urged Vance to address wildfire aid concerns during his visit to southern California, but Vance did not acknowledge this request during his appearance.
