Unrest and protests have erupted at the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in New Jersey, where detainees pushed down a wall in revolt against the conditions they are facing. Approximately 50 detainees were involved in the incident, which reportedly turned violent due to grievances about food and treatment. There are unconfirmed reports of four inmates being unaccounted for, with claims of gas, pepper spray, and a possible fire inside the center. Delaney Hall, managed by GEO Group under a contract with the Trump administration, has a controversial history regarding conditions. The center recently reopened after refurbishment, facing allegations of lacking proper permits and certificates, although GEO Group denies this.

The situation escalated when Democratic representative LaMonica McIver was arrested for allegedly assaulting and interfering with immigration officers during an oversight visit. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was also arrested for trespassing but had the charges dropped. Baraka expressed concern over the lack of oversight at Delaney Hall, criticizing the treatment of detainees and the overall situation.

ICE has not commented on the unrest, which is part of a broader trend of protests against migrant detention under the Trump administration, including deployments of military forces in cities like Los Angeles. These actions face legal challenges, reflecting the ongoing controversy surrounding immigration policies in the US.
