Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets made history by winning both the Hart Trophy for NHL MVP and the Vezina Trophy for the league’s best goaltender, a feat not achieved by a goaltender since Carey Price ten years ago. Hellebuyck’s dominance was evident as he secured the MVP award over top contenders like Leon Draisaitl and Nikita Kucherov. The Vezina Trophy was a clear victory for Hellebuyck, receiving an overwhelming 31 out of 32 first-place votes from general managers.
This marks Hellebuyck’s second consecutive Vezina win and his third overall in his career. Despite his stellar performance, the Jets fell short in the playoffs, losing in the second round to Dallas. Hellebuyck now joins a prestigious group of goalies, including Price, Jose Theodore, Dominik Hasek, and Jacques Plante, who have achieved the Hart-Vezina double.
Other notable winners include Nikita Kucherov, who claimed the Ted Lindsay Award for most outstanding player, and Leon Draisaitl, the first German player to win the Hart Trophy in 2020. Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings also secured the Lady Byng for sportsmanship. The awards ceremony saw surprises this year, with winners revealed without prior notice. Notable recipients included Cale Makar for the Norris Trophy, Aleksander Barkov for the Selke, and Spencer Carbery for the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year.
