“Uncovering the Hidden Dangers: Toxic Chemicals Detected in US Retailers’ Paper Receipts”

Paper receipts from major retailers in the US are found to be heavily contaminated with bisphenol S (BPS), a highly toxic chemical that can be absorbed through the skin in as little as 10 seconds, exceeding California’s safety limits. The Center for Environmental Health (CEH) has taken legal action against retailers using BPS-treated paper, citing its links to cancer and reproductive issues. Violation notices have been sent to companies like Burger King, Chanel, and Dollar General for surpassing Proposition 65 limits for BPS in receipts. The CEH’s study revealed alarming concentrations of BPS, highlighting the risks for individuals, especially cashiers and retail workers, who handle receipts regularly.

While regulators have focused on banning bisphenol A (BPA) due to its toxicity, recent research has shown that BPS, its commonly used alternative, is equally harmful, causing hormone disruption and other health problems. The CEH urges companies to switch to safer alternatives to avoid health risks associated with BPS exposure. Companies receiving violation notices have 60 days to respond by either switching to BPS-free paper or providing warnings to consumers about the toxicity of receipts. Failure to comply could lead to legal action under Proposition 65.

To protect themselves, individuals are advised to avoid taking paper receipts or opt for email receipts instead. The CEH’s efforts aim to raise awareness about the dangers of BPS in receipts and push for safer practices in the use of thermal paper to safeguard public health.
