A tragic cable car accident near Naples resulted in four fatalities and one individual sustaining severe injuries. The incident occurred at Monte Faito, approximately 45km southeast of Naples, where the cable car cabin fell to the ground. Umberto De Gregorio, chairman of the EAV public transport company overseeing the service, described the event as a “tragedy” following the cabin’s crash. Reports indicated that one of the supporting cables had snapped, leading to the catastrophic outcome.
Efforts to rescue the passengers trapped in a cabin suspended mid-air involved evacuating them one by one using harnesses, as showcased in media footage. The rescue operation was challenged by adverse weather conditions, with fog and high winds impeding the process, as mentioned by Vincenzo De Luca, the regional authority in Campania.
Situated near popular tourist destinations like Sorrento and Naples, Monte Faito’s proximity adds a somber note to the accident’s impact. This unfortunate event echoes a similar tragedy in 2021 when 14 individuals lost their lives in Italy due to a cable car malfunction, underscoring the importance of stringent safety measures in such transportation systems.
