HillmanTok University, a virtual “college” launched on TikTok, aims to provide an experience similar to attending an HBCU. Founded by Cierra Hinton, the school offers nearly 400 free courses taught by real college professors, attracting over 11,000 enrollees and 370,000 TikTok users. Despite lacking accreditation, the university fosters a sense of community and joy, particularly amidst challenges to DEI initiatives. The idea stemmed from Black professors and creators hosting courses on TikTok, leading to the school’s rapid growth.

Departments at HillmanTok University offer a variety of courses, from traditional subjects to unique offerings like a culinary class named “We Got Food at Home.” Hinton’s dedication to the project led her to leave her teaching role. The university’s mission, as described by Hinton and team member Leah Moffit, is to connect Black individuals, restore culture, and celebrate education. The school’s name pays homage to the iconic HBCU setting of the TV show “A Different World,” emphasizing the importance of community and cultural appreciation. Moffit highlights the significance of spreading joy and culture, particularly during Black History Month.

In a time of political and social challenges, HillmanTok University stands out as a beacon of learning, community, and cultural revitalization for Black learners and educators alike. Through innovative online education and a strong sense of identity, the university is carving out a space for connection and empowerment within the digital landscape.
