Amid slipping approval ratings, a recent ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll revealed a decline in Americans’ support for President Donald Trump’s handling of immigration since the beginning of his term. The poll, conducted from April 18-22 with 2,529 participants, showed a shift in sentiment, with more respondents now disapproving of Trump’s immigration policies by a 7-point margin, compared to a slight approval in February. However, his current approval rating still surpasses that of his first term.

The Trump administration’s intensified deportation efforts, including the controversial case of a Maryland man wrongly deported to an El Salvador prison, have sparked a legal and political controversy. The poll highlighted Americans’ divided opinions on Trump’s deportation strategies, with 48% believing he is going too far, 16% thinking he is not going far enough, and 34% approving of his approach.

Furthermore, the survey addressed public attitudes towards sending suspected gang members to El Salvador without a court hearing, revealing that 47% supported this measure while 51% opposed it. Regarding the case of Kilmar Abrego García, the man mistakenly deported by the administration, opinions were mixed, with 42% advocating for his return to the U.S.

In addition to immigration policies, the poll touched on other contentious issues, such as the administration’s decision to backtrack on terminating student visas for international students critical of U.S. Middle East policy. Overall, the shifting approval ratings on Trump’s immigration stance align with broader disapproval of his job performance and handling of tariffs, indicating a complex landscape of public opinion on key policy matters.
