President Donald Trump’s approval rating on handling the cost of living in the U.S. is at a low of 31% amid concerns over inflation due to his tariffs on imports, as revealed by a recent Reuters/Ipsos survey. The poll, conducted before Trump’s address to Congress, also showed his ratings below 40% on various issues except for immigration policy, where he garnered a 49% approval rating. Despite an overall approval rating of 44%, higher than his predecessor Joe Biden’s, dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of the cost of living remains evident with 54% disapproving.

Economists warn that Trump’s tariffs could exacerbate inflation, with only 31% of respondents supporting tariffs even if they lead to price increases. Additionally, government reports highlight persistently high inflation, impacting consumer spending. Trump’s pivot to closer ties with Moscow and withholding military aid to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression has divided Americans, with 46% supporting conditioning aid on minerals from Ukraine.

Furthermore, Trump’s appointment of Elon Musk to streamline the federal workforce has sparked debate, with 59% supporting downsizing the government but only 40% backing mass layoffs of civil service workers. Criticism has been directed at Trump for going too far with the Musk-led cost-cutting measures, with 50% of respondents expressing concern. The survey, conducted online nationwide, polled 1,174 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of three percentage points.
