In a recent CBS News/YouGov poll conducted before President Donald Trump ordered National Guard troops into Los Angeles amid immigration protests, 54% of Americans expressed approval of his deportation policy. The same poll revealed that 50% of respondents supported Trump’s overall handling of immigration, compared to 42% who approved of his economic policies and 39% who endorsed his approach to inflation.

Despite sparking violent protests in Los Angeles and other cities, Trump’s immigration crackdown has garnered significant support among voters nationwide. The administration’s directive to ramp up arrests and deportations of immigrants without legal status has been met with approval from his base, with 93% of Republicans backing the efforts compared to 18% of Democrats and 49% of independents.

While Trump justifies the aggressive measures as necessary to combat what he terms an “invasion” and to target violent criminals among illegal immigrants, critics argue that the enforcement actions have ensnared individuals accused of nonviolent offenses or those with no criminal record. Concerns have also been raised about the rushed pace of deportations potentially disregarding due process.

Despite gaining strong support on immigration policy, Trump’s overall approval ratings have remained relatively low, hovering between 45% and 50% according to polls in early June. The ongoing clash between the administration’s immigration tactics and public sentiment reflects a divisive issue that continues to shape political discourse in the United States.
